Elisabeth Riviello, MD, MPH

Dr. Riviello’s area of excellence is Clinical Expertise and Innovation in the field of Global Critical Care, with a focus on improving care for critically ill patients in resource poor settings. She analyzes critical care evidence from resource-rich settings and develops protocols and educational materials for resource-constrained settings. Her research seeks to improve context-specific evidence and informs the international discourse on current best practices and the future research agenda for critical care in low, middle, and high-income countries. She is an invited participant in multiple international initiatives to improve critical care in resource-variable settings and serves on three working groups at the World Health Organization. She provides technical assistance for USAID's COVID-19 efforts and serves as subgroup co-chair for an international group that is re-defining the Berlin definition of ARDS. She has published 38 peer-reviewed papers in this field and has taught critical care in resource-variable settings at Harvard, MIT, MGH, HMS, Boston Children's Hospital, and Boston University. She has mentored residents and fellows across the US and in Rwanda and has created clinical and research rotations for Harvard trainees in Rwanda and Kenya. Her goal is to improve care for critically ill patients worldwide through clinical care, education, and investigation.
